Patrick Rothfuss’s 2007 fantasy novel The Name of the Wind gives a reader more fun than any reader has a right to have. The novel shouldn’t work. Magnificently, it does. (Except for Denna, the most annoying female character ever written.)
The Stars My Destination, by Alfred Bester, was first published in 1956 as “Tiger! Tiger!” Part Gulliver’s Travels, part Count of Monte Cristo, Bester’s hugely entertaining space opera is one of the classics of the Golden Age of SF.
