What a great choice–what a great novel! In my reading of all six Nebula finalists for best novel this year, I picked a different book (Annalee Newitz’s The Terraformers) for first place, but wow, Chandraskera’s novel was right up there too. I was really torn. Luckily, this is not a horse-race. We get to read ALL the great books, not just the winner. And if there’s one book out of the list you read, rest assured you’ll have a fantastic reading experience if you open this one. It’s a first novel–impressive. It’s beautifully written, it intertwines the mythic and the realistic in a fascinating and ingenious way, and it says stuff that really, really needs saying. I loved it.
